‘Weed and Feed’ vs ‘Lawn Feed’

'WEED & FEED' VS 'LAWN FEED'

FERTILISATION

When it comes to picking a fertiliser, you will normally have the option of either a ‘Weed & Feed’ or a ‘Lawn Feed’. The main difference between the 2 is that the ‘Weed & Feed’ includes a weed killing element to it, whereas the ‘Lawn Feed’ simply fertilises the lawn.

A few facts about the 2 options are:

Weed & Feed:
  • It is cheaper than a lawn feed
  • It will fertilise your lawn
  • It contains a weed killer - it will normally kill small weeds, but you will need a targeted treatment for the larger weeds
  • Higher chance of lawn scorching
  • You will find other variants, including the option for moss killer too
  • Once applied, you will not be able to sow seed for 4 weeks, as the weed killer within it will kill the freshly sown seed

Lawn Feed:
  • It is more expensive than a weed & feed
  • It only contains a fertiliser
  • Lower chance of lawn scorching
  • You will find other variants with this, including those that include seed
  • Once applied, you should leave it 4 days before sowing seed

The Verdict

If you speak to a professional, they will generally use a lawn feed rather than a weed & feed - the main reason for this is that a lawn feed has a lower chance of scorching and a professional gardener will not be dependent upon rain or watering when applying it.

If you have a lawn that has hardly any weeds and you are happy spending a little more, then go for a
lawn feed. If you have some weeds and want to save on your fertiliser, go for a weed & feed.
