GRASS SEED

PRODUCT GUIDE

When it comes to buying seed, there are lots of different variants, as you will see below. However, it gets even more complicated than this, so this has been simplified to help you pick the basic types and which suits your needs.

Simply picking the correct seed is not all you need to grow grass from seed, so if you are having issues, do not always presume that this is the cause. But, when you are looking to sow new seed, take a look at the different options to work out which is the best option for you. Also, it is worth considering if sowing seed is the best option and whether turf may be the right choice for you -
check out this article to decide.

Coated vs Non-Coated

With your different types of grass seed, you will find that they may offer coated and non-coated versions. Basically, this coating is designed to absorb and hold water which then helps the seed grow. The coated options tend to be a little more expensive than the non-coated versions.

If you find that the coated version is only a little more expensive then it may be worth opting for, but if the cost differential is a lot, then maybe give it a miss. Either way, the seed will grow if you give it the correct conditions, so you can’t go wrong between the two options, but coated will give you a little more support to grow.

Shady Seed

If you have a lawn that is not exposed to a lot of sunlight, then this may be an option for you. This can be easily evaluated by looking at the amount of sunlight that falls on the lawn during the spring, summer and autumn months. Factors which may influence this include:

  • The orientation of your lawn (north and east facing gardens will have less light)
  • The size of your garden (smaller gardens will be more enclosed by fences and only get light at the height of the sun
  • The amount of trees and bushes around your lawn (large bushes and trees will cause more shade to cover your lawn)

Family/Sports Seed

This option is designed for lawns which are prone to high amounts of traffic on them. So, if you have children or even adults spending a lot of time on the lawn, these will cope well.

The higher the traffic on the lawn, the higher the compaction of the soil. So, if you have issues with compaction, you can either opt for a family/sport seed or you can combat this with increased
aeration.

If you are looking for a family/sports seed, try A1 Lawn hard wearing seed from Amazon.

Ornamental Seed

When cutting your lawn, we would normally recommend not cutting it too short, as this can damage the lawn. However, ornamental seed is designed to allow for a shorter cut, so this is an option if you are looking for this on your lawn.

Realistically, this option is not especially common and can be quite costly, so this won’t be an option for you unless you plan to turn your lawn into a putting green!

If you are looking for an ornamental seed, try A1 Lawn ornamental seed from Amazon.

Normal/Universal

This is your standard lawn seed and designed for a lawn which is exposed to ‘normal’ conditions. The way to work out if this is for you is by ruling out all of the other lawn seeds. If you do not have the need for any of them, then this is for you.

If you are looking for a universal seed, try A1 Lawn general purpose seed from Amazon.
