You will find a few different variants of weed killers, which will normally come in a granular or spray format. However, not all of these variants will be safe to use on your lawn

Lawn Weedkiller (Spray) - 9/10

Lawn weed killer is a really important product for creating a healthy and weed free lawn. This weed killer is safe to use on lawns and will kill leafy plants or weeds that pop up in your lawn, but will not kill the lawn itself. When using this, you will need to use it sparingly upon each application and aim for the weed rather than grass. These do tend to be less effective compared to a standard weed killer, so you may need to apply this a couple of times to bigger weeds. 

You do still need to be careful with this as it should not be used on new lawns, but it is a great option for clearing weeds from your lawn.

You have to be very careful when buying this and to make sure it is a lawn weed killer rather than a normal weed killer. These tend to come in a green bottle, however, the instructions on the bottle will guide you.

Weed Killer (Spray) - N/A

Standard weed killer is seriously potent stuff - it will kill any and all plants and grass, so be super careful when using it. If you accidentally use this on a lawn, you will kill the grass and it will not grow back for quite some months - if you accidentally use this, your best hope is to soak it in water and hope that you can dilute it.

This is really good to use around your lawn on paved or gravelled areas, so it is really handy to have but be careful not to mix it up with your lawn weed killer.

Weed and Feed (Granular) - 4/10

Weed and Feed is a treatment that can be applied to your lawn in a granular form and is designed to kill weeds and fertilise your lawn. This sounds great in theory and it is, but it is more of a fertiliser than it is is a weed killer. It is brilliant at giving you a very green lawn, but as a weed killer it isn’t especially the best. 

If you have widespread weeds then this is not a bad option for you as it should hopefully start to clear some weeds for you, but you would need to follow up with a lawn weed killer. So we would normally recommend a lawn weed killer for effectiveness.
