Having to remove moss can be frustrating and the best form of moss control is prevention rather than removal. Removal of moss can be rather time consuming, so preventing it in the first place and prevention is always better than removal.
Maintaining a healthy and thick lawn is the best way to prevent moss from appearing. By having a healthy and dense lawn, you allow no room for moss to grow in the soil and ultimately prevent moss from forming.
Likewise, you want to minimise any bare spots on the lawn. By having a bare patch, the soil is exposed which then allows moss to access the soil and grow. As and when you get a bare patch,
re-seed it as soon as possible.
One of the most common causes of moss appearing is by mowing your lawn too short. By cutting it short, it exposes the soil to the air and allows for moss to form
On the contrary, if you keep your lawn a little longer, it will prevent moss from infiltrating the lawn and giving an all-round healthier lawn.
Smaller patches of moss are always easier to remove than large extensive patches. Smaller patches can be quickly eradicated with a single treatment, whereas a larger patch may require multiple treatments.
Because it is also bigger, it then opens up the possibility of creating a bare patch after it is removed. This bare patch can then be prone to more moss and
weeds growing until it has been
re-seeded successfully.
Furthermore, as long as the moss is in the lawn, there is the possibility that it will spread and create additional moss throughout the lawn. So, as soon as you spot it, get it removed.
