In October, you are really going to want to keep an eye on the weather, as you are looking for your last cut of the year, before winter kicks in.
If we have a more mild October, then you might be a little more active in the garden, but the likelihood is that you will be putting your lawn to bed this month.
As we are looking for our last cut, you are going to want to cut a little more regularly in October, as you might not know when the last cut will be. Whilst the grass might not be growing quickly, due to the lower temperatures, the rainfall will limit when you can get onto your lawn.
In October, you are going to be leaving your lawn at a higher length - around the
1.5 inches mark. As always, stick to the
golden rule and never take off ⅓ of the height of the grass. As you are keeping it longer, the more regular trim works well.
Treat every cut in October as if it is your last cut of the year, as the weather might turn quickly!
Make sure you keep on top of the edges of your lawn. As the frequency of mowing will be significantly reduced now, you will want to keep the edges neat and trim them with each cut, as weather will control how often you can get to your lawn
It is rather late in the year to be doing any weed control and September is normally the cut off for this. If we do have a mild October and the odd weed is popping up, you may want to apply a lawn weed killer early in the month.
